Why Agent Projects Underperform

Recognize why attractive agent demonstrations often fail in production.

What This Decision Controls

Agent projects underperform when scope, escalation logic, integrations, and success metrics are assumed instead of defined.

This decision affects the reliability, cost, governance burden, and operating value of the agent long after the first demonstration.

How to Evaluate It

A bounded workflow with a clear handoff is usually more valuable than a broad agent promise.

Work from a real workflow and real constraints. A technically possible design is not automatically the right operating design for your organization.

Decision Checklist

  • State the business outcome and the bounded task the agent must support.
  • Identify the accountable business owner, technical owner, and required human reviewer.
  • Confirm the data, integrations, escalation path, and metric required before a build decision.

Worked Decision Scenario

A sales team launches an impressive lead-research demo, but the agent cannot reliably access the CRM, the owner of its output is unclear, and no one has agreed on the definition of a qualified lead. The demonstration creates enthusiasm without an operating model.

Before adding new capabilities, the team narrows the scope to lead enrichment for one segment, assigns a sales-operations owner, and measures the quality of the data passed to representatives.
