Identifying Automation Opportunities

Turn a broad AI idea into comparable business opportunities.

Core Concept

Good opportunities are concrete: they have a defined user, workflow, decision, volume, and outcome. Vague AI ambitions cannot be prioritized fairly.

This choice influences the value case, implementation effort, governance requirements, and the organization’s ability to operate the system after launch.

How to Apply the Framework

Frame each opportunity using frequency, business impact, feasibility, and strategic relevance.

Use a current workflow, its measurable baseline, and the real people and systems involved. A strategy that works only in a simplified example is not yet a decision-ready operating plan.

Decision Checklist

  • State the business outcome and the bounded workflow this decision will improve.
  • Identify the accountable business owner, technical owner, and required human reviewer.
  • Confirm the evidence, dependencies, controls, and decision gate required before moving forward.

Worked Decision Scenario

Operations, sales, and finance each propose an AI idea. By framing every opportunity around a user, workflow, volume, outcome, and feasibility constraint, the leadership team can compare them on the same basis.

A high-visibility idea with no stable data may rank below a smaller workflow with clear volume and a measurable service impact. The framework makes that tradeoff explicit.
